Rock Garden - Before and After
Location
Cape Elizabeth, Maine
Project type
New Garden
Date
September 2022
In this project, the client knew the granite outcrop in her backyard had great potential for a beautiful rock garden. In helping her bring it to life, I defined the garden edge and uncovered more of the gray, craggy ledge, the design's centerpiece. I then installed plants that thrive in shallow soil and can tolerate full sun and salt. Some of these plants include various sedums, sea holly (one of my favorites), blue star juniper, low bush blueberries (great for eating and fall color), cranesbill, and lavender. The result is a beautiful patchwork of color that delivers four-seasons of interest against a background of ocean blue.
